Dimension of Absence

Documentary, 15 min, directed by Sjors Swierstra, produced by Blackframe

Editor: Daan Wijdeveld NCE

Although she did not live through Argentina’s last military junta (1974–1983) herself, Argentine-Dutch visual artist Aimée Zito Lema grew up in the shadow of the violent history that marked her family and her country. At a young age she became fascinated by archive photos of people who dared to stand up against Jorge Videla’s regime.

In Buenos Aires, she and her daughter create a performance artwork in which they embody the past and try to imagine a new future. She shows how art can act as a medium for processing the past, bridging national borders and generations.
